(SANFORD, FL) Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) will host a building naming ceremony in honor of Ingrid Burton Nathan on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at 4:30 p.m. located at Sanford Middle School (SMS) at 1700 S. French Ave., Sanford, Florida 32771. The event will take place outside near the SMS green house.

In 1964, Ingrid Burton Nathan integrated Sanford Junior High School at age 14 and was one of several to integrate Seminole High School a year later. Despite enduring loneliness, bullying, threats, and accusations of cheating, she graduated in the top 10% of her class and was accepted to the National Honor Society. Mrs. Nathan later attended and graduated from Florida Southern College with a B.A. in Spanish. She then became a teacher and taught Spanish for 38 years with SCPS, retiring in 2009. Her legacy is not only how she had the courage to change history and pave the way for the expansion of integration into other schools, but as a symbol of hope for future students to never give up.
