Internship Expo to Provide Career Experiences for SCPS High School Students

(LAKE MARY, Fla.) Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) is excited to announce the SCPS 2016 Spring Internship Expo, which is expected to draw high school sophomores and juniors interested in securing one of the 100 internship positions that will be offered by over 50 regional employers. This event will take place on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at The Westin Lake Mary (2974 International Pkwy., Lake Mary, FL 32746).

At the expo, 9th grade students who are interested in participating in an internship in the future will have the opportunity to participate in mock interviews, have their resumes reviewed by industry professionals, and partake in breakout sessions that will prepare them for the workplace. Students in 10th and 11th grade ready to participate in an internship this summer and/or fall will be able to network and share their resumes with employers to potentially secure an internship. Students will have access to paid and unpaid experiences in fields such as information technology (IT), healthcare, accounting, finance, sales, marketing, construction, engineering, hospitality, education, and many more. Students will work for at least 133 hours to earn one high school credit. Employers include both businesses and public service organizations.

This event is part of the SCPS Education Pathways (ePathways) initiative, which seeks to provide students with customized learning experiences that prepare them for the dynamics of today’s fast-paced economy. Workplace learning opportunities empower students to augment their classroom education by applying their skills, passions, and interests to authentic employment experiences. “We are excited to provide students with opportunities to gain applicable work experience in the industries they are interested in while still in high school. This gives them a competitive edge and helps them learn more about a potential career field,” said Dr. Walt Griffin, Superintendent, SCPS.

Through the facilitation of internships, employers provide access to elements of work that are not readily available to entry-level employees. “High school internships are a win-win for the community. Students benefit from early exposure to the world of work, and employers enjoy the energy and enthusiasm and fresh ideas that student interns bring to their businesses while also contributing to local talent development,” said Dr. Jason Wysong, Director of ePathways and Strategic Partnerships for SCPS.
