Helping My Student In ELA

Student Reading Book

To encourage your child to continue to grow in the area of English Language Arts and Reading at home, please consider the following ideas. The FLDOE provides Parent Guides for students in each grade level with suggested books, activities, and more. For additional reading strategies, please review the FLDOE Read at Home Plan.

Family reading and writing strategies:

  • Have your child read for 20 minutes each day.

  • Listen to your child read and reread a text.

  • Be a reading role model. If your child sees you reading, he or she will see the importance of reading.

  • Be frequent visitors to your local public library.

  • Have your child research information about a topic.

  • Have your child engage in real-world writing. Write a letter to a family member, write a short story or have them keep a daily journal.

  • Set up and carry out a family debate night on a topic that interests your child.

  • Find and post a family word of the week or month.
