Join us in celebrating the contributions, resilience, and achievements of individuals with disabilities throughout history and today. This month is a time to:
Learn about the history of the disability rights movement
Promote understanding in our schools and communities
Celebrate the talents and strengths of people with disabilities
Reflect on how we can build a more accessible and empathetic world
Let’s work together to create a culture of respect, kindness, and opportunity for all. Whether through classroom activities, community events, or personal reflection, everyone can be a part of this important celebration.
Be a voice for Understanding. Be a champion for change.
Did you know….?
Disability History and Awareness Weeks were established in Florida law in 2008 through Section 1003.4205, Florida Statutes. This statute requires all Florida school districts to designate the first two weeks of October each year as “Disability History and Awareness Weeks.” During this time, schools may provide instruction to enhance students’ knowledge, understanding, and awareness of individuals with disabilities, the history of disability, and the disability rights movement.
In 2025, the Florida Legislature passed House Bill (HB) 447, which was signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis on May 20, 2025. Effective July 1, 2025, HB 447—also known as the Evin B. Hartsell Act—amends Section 1003.4205 to include grade-specific instructional topics.
These topics include:
- Grades K–3: Conversations about bullying and activities focused on physical disabilities
- Grades 4–6: Information about autism spectrum disorder
- Grades 7–9: Information about hearing impairments
- Grades 10–12: Information on learning and intellectual disabilities
