Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) has proudly partnered with Seminole State college to provide the alternative certification program.
If you are currently employed as a teacher with SCPS and are on a temporary certificate you need to successfully complete district and state requirements within 3 years to maintain your employment status and qualify for your Professional Certificate.
Each pathway to a Professional Certificate can vary from person to person. The Statement of Eligibility Letter you received from the Florida Department of Education will outline your specific requirements to qualify for a Professional Teaching Certificate. Below the general requirements of a person on a temporary certificate seeking their Professional Certificate through an Alternative Pathway.
Pass General Knowledge Test (within one year of employment start date)
Pass Subject Area Test(s)
Pass Professional Education Test

Complete an ESOL Course in first year of employment (if successfully completed with SCPS, Seminole State’s will apply credit towards their EPI Program Requirements)
Complete Reading Comp II Course (if successfully completed with SCPS, Seminole State’s will apply credit towards their EPI Program Requirements)
Complete an EPI Program (aka Alternative Certification Program)
The EPI program provides is a direct pathway to Professional Certification for baccalaureate degree holders, in a field other than education. Those who successfully complete the EPI program and achieve passing scores on the required exams will receive their five-year Professional Teaching Certificate.
