2024 Spring Semester Driver Education
Prerequisite: Students must have their learner’s permit to register for the course.
Driver education is now offered through a blended model with two required components: 1) online eCampus course and 2) behind-the-wheel instruction. The online eCampus course is self-paced and done at home or other location, not on a school campus. This online eCampus course must be completed by February 20 before the students are eligible for behind-the-wheel instruction. The behind-the-wheel instruction includes three 2-hour private driving lessons with a community partner, the Florida Safety Council, in their vehicles equipped with dual brakes. The behind-the-wheel instruction must be completed by May 22, 2024. Upon successful completion of the entire driver education course, students receive .5 credit with a grade of Pass/Fail and a certificate of completion that some insurance companies may accept for a reduced rate.
Enrollment is limited and if more applications are received than space available in the course, a lottery will be held. Students will be notified of their enrollment status in the course through their school email account.
Drivers Education Application
Applications must be submitted by December 5 at 4 pm and they must be submitted by the student using their student email account. Students will be notified via their school email account by December 13 of their status in the course.
Driver Education FAQs:
1. Can my child miss any days from driver education?
A. The online eCampus course is done independently so students work at their own pace but must finish the online component by February 20. However, as soon as they compete the online eCampus course, they are eligible to begin the behind-the-wheel lessons. The Florida Safety Council will contact the student (do not call them) to schedule the behind-the-wheel lessons. Lessons are offered 7 days a week. All driving lessons must be completed to successfully pass the course.
2. Does my child need their learner’s permit to take driver education?
A. Yes, students must have their learner’s permit to register for the course.
3. What other opportunities are there if my child does not get accepted into driver education this summer?
A. The driver education course will be offered in the summer with the same blended model (online eCampus and behind-the-wheel instruction).
4. The driver education course is offered as Pass/Fail. What does that mean?
A. The Pass/Fail option means that a student earns .5 credit with a "Pass" for this course, but it does not impact the student’s GPA (grade point average).
5. Where is the Florida Safety Council located?
A. The Florida Safety Council is located at 7800 S US Hwy. 17-92 in Casselberry. Students are responsible for their transportation.
